Brannen Flutes visit UT Austin




One of the Austin Flute Club's goals is to promote flute 'happenings' in the Austin and Central Texas area.


We have recently learned that Brannen Flutes will be visiting the University of Texas at Austin this Tuesday! The event is open to the public. Flutes and Headjoints will be available for attendees to try.

Summer Flute Ensemble Initiative Recital Details for 6/24/2010


The Summer Flute Ensemble Initiative Flute Chamber Recital features works by J.S. Bach, Bizet, Beethoven, Haydn, Quantz, and Tcherepnin. Area high school flutists featured on this performance are Ann George, Jocelynn Hall, Sarah Hassall, Ana Ocanas and Eunice Shih.

All flutists in the recital hall are encouraged to join in on the final piece, an arrangement of Sheep May Safely Graze from J.S. Bach's Hunting Cantata, BWV 208. We'll run through the arrangement at 6:30PM in the Concordia Chapel. Please bring your flute and a stand if you'd like to join in on the final piece.

Jennifer Reece, flute and Colette Valentine, piano Performance Details for 6/24/2010

Jennifer Reece and Colette Valentine will be performing the Schubert Variations, Ibert Piece, and the first movement of the Quantz Concerto in G Major.

A light lunch is available following the performance. Reservations are required.
Please e-mail reservations to concerts@cpcaustin.org with "Lunch" in the subject line, no later than Noon the Wednesday before the concert with your reservations. They ask for a donation of $5 for adults, and $3 for children 10 and under.

Parking, while sometimes a challenge in downtown Austin, is usually available 2 blocks east of the church on Trinity across from the Baptist Church at street meters. You may also park at the Perry Brooks Building garage (1/2 block south of CPC on Brazos on the west side of the street). Park on the 4th or 5th floor, then go through the door in the middle of the north wall, turn to your right, take the elevator down and you'll arrive near the church entrance. Be sure to bring your ticket in to be stamped, and it will only cost $3. (Another option is the State's garage at 12th & Trinity. It provides 2 hours of free covered parking.)

Summer Flute Camps for Middle and High School Flutists in Austin, TX

Two upcoming flute camps in the Austin, TX area are currently accepting applications. Both represent wonderful opportunities for middle and high school students to experience new repertoire and perspectives on flute performance.

The Summer Flute Ensemble Initiative is taking place from June 14-24 at Concordia University and June 14-26 at Hope Chapel in Austin, TX. This camp includes a recital at the end of the session featuring middle and high school flutists performing flute chamber music. Activities include sight-reading sessions of U.I.L. flute ensemble music, technique master classes, ensemble rehearsals and coaching.
Flute Faculty: Dr. Ellen C. Johnson.
Registration is $90 and the due date has been extended to June 9.

Creative Flute Master Classes 2010 will take place in Austin, TX at Grisham Middle School from July 19-22 and 26-29. Middle School Classes focus on fundamentals, solo literature and flute choir. High School Classes focus on learning, understanding and performing the All State Flute Etudes.

Registration is $200 and the due date is June 15.

John Thorne Recital and Master Class

John Thorne, associate principal flutist of the Houston Symphony, will give a recital and lead a master class along with Colette Valentine, UT Butler School of Music lecturer of collaborative piano, on Saturday, May 8th from 12:30-3:00pm. This event will be held at Central Christian Church- 1110 Guadalupe St. There is free parking in the back of the church. A reception will follow.
This event is generously sponsored by the Brannen Brothers Flutemakers and the Brannen-Cooper Fund.

Francois Minaux, DMA student at UT, will give a non-degree chamber recital on Tuesday, April 27th at 7:30pm. The recital is to be held at the UT Butler School of Music Recital Studio, MRH 2.608. The Austin Flute Choir will perform with him on "Meditation" by Stella Sung.

David Wechsler, a New York based flutist and founder of the OMNI Ensemble, will perform a recital along with the talents of Ezra Bartz on piano, Texas State- San Marcos faculty. The recital will be held at St. John's UMC of Austin, located at 2140 Allandale Rd. The program is to include:

Austin Flute Club's Young Artist Competition Sunday, March 7th at the UT Butler School of Music

Austin Flute Club will hold its 22nd annual Young Artist Competition on Sunday, March 7th at the UT Butler School of Music. Twenty-two 8th and 9th graders will perform in the Junior Flute Division, fourteen 10th through 12th graders will perform in the Senior Flute Division, and four 10th through 12th graders will perform in the Piccolo Division. The competition will run from 2:00 to 6:00pm with possible call backs happening before the announcement of the winners. All applicants will receive critical comments from the judges. Good luck to all of the participants!

We would like to thank our judges in advance for their contribution as well as Professor Marianne Gedigian and the UT Butler School of Music for their continued support of the YAC.

UT Faculty Chamber Concert at the Blanton Museum Sunday, February 14th at 2pm

The Butler School of Music and the Blanton Museum of Art
present a tribute to the music of Handel, featuring UT
professors Marianne Gedigian, flute; Joshua Gindele, cello;
Judith Hancock, keyboard; and Roger Myers, viola.

The concert fee is included with paid admission to the Blanton Museum.

Paid parking is available in the Brazos Garage at Brazos Street
and MLK, one block east of the museum. You may park here for $3
if you present your ticket and pay at the Blanton's Visitor Services
Desk. Parking on streets nearby the Blanton is free on evenings
after 5:45 PM and weekends. There are also many State of Texas
employee lots that are free after 6 PM on the evenings and weekends.

2010 Austin Flute Club Young Artist Competition

The 2010 AFC Young Artist Competition will be held on Sunday, March 7th beginning at 2pm at the UT Butler School of Music. Applications need to be postmarked by February 19th to be eligible to participate.

8th and 9th graders will compete in the Junior Flute Division. 10th, 11th and 12th graders will compete in the Senior Flute Division and/or the Piccolo Division. Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third places of the flute divisions and to the first place of the piccolo division.

All those who place in the competition will be showcased in the YAC Winners' Recital on Sunday, March 28th beginning at 3pm in the UT Butler School of Music Recital Studio, MRH 2.608. A reception will follow.

Saturday, January 30th French Music Master Class & Student Recital

Francois Minaux will lead a master class and recital with pianist Colette Valentine focusing on the French repertoire. Works by Faure, Godard, Jolivet, Perilhou and Poulenc will be performed. Attendance is free for Austin Flute Club members. (We will have membership applications at the door.) A reception will follow.

A student recital will begin early afternoon. There will be thirteen middle and high school students presenting a wide variety of the flute literature.

Come join us for a day filled with wonderful music!
